I figure I should loosen up a bit and do some toony kitty doodles. Stay tuned for more of these, as well as cleaned up, slightly animated, color versions.
Oh yeah, and if you haven't gathered yet by my daily posts this week, my new year resolution is to draw more and post it to this blog. The headline at the top does say "mostly daily" after all.

In addition to hands, I also need to practice drawing interiors. I never draw them. So many details! I get so bored drawing them. I just need to get over it and concentrate more.

Hands

If I'm ever going to draw real people and not just crazy nubby alien creatures, I'm going to need to practice a few things. Like drawing hands, for instance. I think my biggest weakness in drawing is not enough attention to detail, so I usually rough out clumsy mitten hands when drawing a whole person. I figure one way to get over this is to focus on the hands themselves.

This isn't entirely off topic for my blog. No animation, but it's more beautiful and funny than my animated doodles aspire to be, and I had a small part it in. It was also enthusiastically reviewed by the New York Times! Go see it!

Now that I'm back to work fulltime, I'm going to be posting a lot of these quick doodle sketches. I'm still going to spend time on getting out my little weird "pod guy" cartoon, but I think it's going to be in little episodic chunks rather than the fully fleshed beautiful cartoon I've been envisioning. It seems more doable, internet friendly, and fun that way. In the meantime, more sketches!

I'm back from my travels in Massachusetts, South Carolina, Florida, Montreal, and Chicago. It's been a great summer seeing family and friends. But it's over! I doodled this on the subway tonight on my way home from work. I was thinking about these odd things trapped and squirming around.

Sighting

I try to keep this blog about the short I'm trying to make, but every now and then I'll throw in a sketch or photo about something off topic. Like now. I was just in Florida for 10 days with my family and we snorkeled off the shore as we usually do when we're down there. The visibility wasn't as good on a particular day, and I couldn't see more than a few feet in front of me. We were by some rocks, peacefully watching the schools of silver fish sail by, when suddenly a huge shape came right at my face. I had no idea what it was, I just knew it was huge. And swimming fast. At me. I immediately and quite inarticulately yelled, "Guys, BIG! THING! HERE!" And booked it back to shore as fast as I could. Well I shouldn't have been so chicken, because my dad got a good enough look at it to determine that it was a harmless manatee. We got to see it later when we were standing around in the water sans snorkels and it swam around our legs for a few seconds, before taking off to deeper waters. Below is a quick sketch I did later of glimpsing the hulking shape underwater before fleeing. In other marine life news, we followed a large manta ray around for an hour, and rescued a baby sea turtle. Now I have a few more little summer trips before getting back to the grind.
